Recently got a new pc, put the HDD from old pc into new one, reinstalled Steam however I want to use the library from old pc on new one but keep it on external.

New pc has a SSD which I do not want to fill up so going to put everything going to the external.

    Any ideas please?

  • According to this reddit thread, it should be possible to create a new steam library on the external drive, and then copy the games from the old install directory to the new library.

Yes. You have to make Steam create the directory first. Then copy the games into the directory afterward. It won't let you create the directory if it isn't empty. Then afterward just install games like normal and it will "detect already installed data" when it tries to install your game and jump to 99% and then complete.

  • Go to Steam -> Settings, and find this button:

Click it, and you will see this:

Add the location of your old library found on your HDD there, and Steam will immediately recognize it.

  • to and restore to the new drive. I was thinking I could use the hard drive I'm going to put in the PS3 as a temporary backup drive, transfer the files onto my computer and then put that drive into the PS3. After that I can mount the old ps3 hard drive into the external enclosure, format it and then transfer the backup data onto the now external old-PS3 hard drive and restore backup data like normal. Is this process possible? The reason why I want to do this is because most of my current games are downloaded from the PS Store and I don't want to have to go through the process of downloading

  • I have manually copied the skyrim directory of steamapps from my old computer to a new one. After installing Steam again, I tried to copy all files back again to start the game, but, when I start steam, it doesn't recognize Skyrim as installed, and need to download again 10Gb of game. :-/ I didn't know about the Steam Backup feature, so, someone can help me, I think it is a Windows Registry Keys that are missing, but I can't find anything on web related to that! • at a later time (which i have used in the past on the PC, just not a console). However, it seems that there is no way to make that profile associate with an existing xbox live account. I only have the option to create a new account, or download an existing one. Am I not going to be able to use my old xbox live profile, if I want to keep the saved games and achievements from my local account? Basically I just want the saved games from the local account accessible from the xbox live account.

  • Ok so I've seen the other questions about installing games onto another drive(SSD) and I've already done that properly for any new game that I have been getting. However I want to know if there is a proper way to transfer games from my old drive over to the new drive without having to uninstall and then re-download them. I already tried copying the folders over but all that does is make steam not know where the games are anymore and I'm not sure how to change the location that it looks for a particular game once it is already installed on my C drive. Thank you!

  • , if something happens to my Wii U, will I be able to use my external drive's content in any way on a new Wii U system? .... I've heard some icky backup suggestions like manually copying files. However, since you can move games/their saves over 100% to an external source (which I should then be able to back up), it seems like if all my game/save content is on an external device I should be able to back up that device and keep all my content, right? So if all my content is on an external drive can I really back it up
