My preferred strategy at this point is to use a combination of burst laser and ion to keep enemies' weapons offline, however I seem to run into a lot of problems especially with higher level ships if they have drones. They tend to beat down my shields and if the opposing ship gets a good volley off it can really wreak havoc especially if I am dealing with a boarding party as well.
I have tried to keep drone control offline on the enemy ship but it doesn't work as well as weapons suppression (as above). I think this is mostly because drones come back online and begin attacking immediately after the system is repaired, as opposed to weapons needing to charge.
Is there any way to destroy or disable drones other than damaging/disabling the enemy drone control module?
As always, the best defense is a good offense. If you can take his drone control offline, you just need to work harder to keep it offline. That might mean targeting the drone system to disrupt repairs even when there are other undamaged systems to target. You are correct that drones can come back online quickly and this is an issue. I'm not sure the enemy actually has to spend drone parts to do this, though you would have to.
Defensively, dodge and shielding of course matter. You can't have too much of either (well, dodge from engines experiences diminishing returns at higher levels of system improvement, so don't overdo it there). Getting to 2 points in shields fairly early can be a very good investment, and I like to have 3 by sector 5 or so.
You can destroy drones around your ship with ship weapons, however this is a coincidental thing and the drones can be brought back online with the expenditure of a drone part. If the orbiting drone happens to collide with a projectile, boom. It's very unusual; I have only seen it once myself.

If this is the case then I could send my crew over to the enemy ship, take out their Drone Control system and rain down...I am trying to get the second achievement for the rock cruiser "Destroy an enemy ship with a defense drone using only missiles." Can I get this achievement if I also use an Ion weapon? The text indicates that the enemy must be destroyed. To destroy a ship you must do damage ether with weapons (missiles, bombs, beams, lasers) or with fire. The "with" of the statement could be referring
The X-Rebirth drone flying mechanic is interesting: it's kind of neat to explore the system from far away (although that has put me in positions where my ship has taken damage while I was playing drone pilot). My question is: can my drones be destroyed? It seems like drones bamf back to your hold if you hit escape, no matter how far they are from the ship. Is it possible for an enemy to kill one faster that you can hit the key? Can they be destroyed at all? Is there a max distance for them to teleport back to your drone hangar?
Why is it that my Slug crewmembers count drones as lifeforms when showing the position of enemies using their telepathic abilities? Whenever I have no sensors or only one rank of sensors (or they are damaged, whatever) I can locate all enemies as they move about either ship as red dots, this being the unique utility of the Slug race while in combat. I also however see drones that operate... (I know Rockmen exist) or oxygen damage and what should be the dividing factor the 'Anti-Bio Beam' doesn't affect them. This can be annoying and often a repair drone will make me target my Bio Beam
I recently found a Boarding Drone, but was wondering; do you need a teleporter to teleport the drone onto the enemy ship, or does it automatically spawn at a room in the enemy ship?
The Kulrathi start off with armor technology and have hulls that have large capacity on the sides. I tried to design a side firing ship because there are options to have ships "keep enemy at x side". It was too slow and the enemy fighters carouselled around to its weak side. Many weapon modules can have their field of fire rotated to face the sides as well, so I thought this would be something... ship that is as capable as a front-firing ship?
The Umgah Drone is probably my worst ship in Star Control melee. I know that in general I'm supposed to zip back close to the enemy ship while constantly shooting - attempting to damage it while passing - but the combination of slow turning speed and extremely fast zipping speed always makes me miss. Not to mention I generally try to be with my face to the enemy ship - in order to block shots...; but that really puts me in a passive position where all I do is defend and not attack. Does anyone have useful tips for efficiently using the drone?
Sometimes I swear, on all that is holy, I see my anti-ship drone shoot an enemy laser out of the air as it leaves its gun. This is similar to how a Defense Drone Mark 2 will shoot lasers out of the air same as missiles, except it happens on the ENEMY SHIP side of the screen rather than the FRIENDLY SHIP side. Has anyone else ever noticed this?
There are several side quests where you have to use the scout drone on your ship to scan underwater areas. On my ship I do not have the "scout drone" in my slot. I cannot buy this item either. What can I do?
), my mistake; Zerg made quick expo, I did too; Few minutes Zerg was leading in drone amount (he had around 45-50 drones, I had - around 35 SCVs), but it was mostly compensated with my MULEs, also I did him hellion drop and killed around 15 drones; mutas killed my medivacs in the end of drop. Middle game: I made 2nd expansion, zerg did 2 more. I denied his 1 and killed drones on the 2nd exp (so he left on 3 bases with around 40 drones), he denied my 2nd exp (so I left on 2 bases with 40 SCVs too). The next thing was his mutas+ultralisk+lings+bannelings attack on my natural. I had enough
