How to approach Nellis Air base?

  • How to approach Nellis Air base? martin

When trying to approach Nellis Air Base in Fallout New Vegas, One has to dodge the artillery. The hint you get is to hide behind some high buildings in the northwest (I think). Anyway, there are no high buildings to be seen and I receive the same damage wether I'm near a wall or in the open, I never manage to reach the base.

    What's the trick?

  • I've always done this by hugging the rock ridge on the left side as you approach the base. Most of the rockets will land on the ridge above you, keeping you safe. Once you're close to the fence, the firing stops, and you can follow the fence to the gate and meet Raquel.

If you do take a direct hit, in non-hardcore mode you can just hit the Pip-Boy and use a few stimpaks to restore your health. (This assumes you're high enough level to survive a hit - leveling up before approaching the base is recommended.) Don't neglect your legs - if they get crippled, make sure you use a stimpak on them to keep your movement speed from slowing to a crawl.

The notes section of the Nellis Air Force Base article on the Fallout Wikia lists a few alternative strategies, should mine just not work out for you.

  • In trying to develop a good attack strategy, I need to know more about how the defense building AI works. As of this question there are seven different defensive buildings (cannon, archer tower, mortar, air defense, wizard tower, hidden tesla, crossbow). The game is pretty clear that some target ground, some air, and some both. What I am interested in is, given many eligible targets: In what... one dies)? Do defensive buildings prioritize targets that are attacking them? These kinds of nuances make a big difference when selecting and deploying a raid group, since every unit is precious

  • that they will always win in a base race. If I arrive at their base and start killing their workers and buildings, they simply go to my base and do the same. This usually happens around the early-mid push so both... is that there is far less risk for them leaving their base unattended. Why? They can simply lift off a lot of their buildings which can't be killed fast enough by stalkers, since I also need an approximately... enough to defend from his force. My understanding is if you don't have an air unit or a unit on the ramp you can't see the units attacking you. However, after watching the replay, once my stalkers engaged the siege tanks on the lower ground they became visible to the Terran player and he was able to hit them with his siege tanks. He didn't have any air units gaining him line of sight or access to the ramp
